Our Health Education is community-based and Haitian led.

Our patients often come to us with medical issues related to poor hygiene, lack of knowledge about basic nutrition, the nonexistence of food safety measures, and substandard infant and toddler care. Many parents just simply are not aware of the practices that could keep them healthy.

We’ve treated many cases of critical malnutrition in infants and Kwashiorkor (fluid retention in the stomach) in toddlers. Empowering Haiti has been successful in educating parents about these dire conditions. Our hope is to continue our success, through nutritional education, to reduce these critical situations.

Good hygiene is also difficult for the majority of people due to a lack of running water or toilet facilities. In a place where preparing food means carrying water from as far as two miles away, dishes are not properly washed. The lack of refrigeration prohibits food safety. By educating the community on safe food practices and proper hygiene, we have seen a decrease in the number of preventable diseases.
